History of Tadoba

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is situated in eastern Maharashtra, and is renowned for its dense forests, covering an expansive area of 45 miles. Established in 1935, it gained national park status in 1955, earning fame for the rich flora and fauna.

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve stands as the largest national park in Maharashtra, encompassing a total area of 625.4 square kilometers (241.5 sq mi). This includes Tadoba National Park, spanning 116.55 square kilometers (45.00 sq mi), and Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary, covering 508.85 square kilometers (196.47 sq mi). Additionally, the reserve comprises 32.51 square kilometers (12.55 sq mi) of protected forest and 14.93 square kilometers (5.76 sq mi) of uncategorized land.

To the southwest lies the 120-hectare (300-acre) Tadoba Lake, serving as a buffer between the park's forest and extensive farmland extending up to the Irai water reservoir. This perennial water source provides a conducive habitat for the thriving population of Muggar crocodiles.

Situated in proximity to the Chandrapur district, Tadoba Reserve encompasses the Chimur Hill, with the Andhari sanctuary covering the Moharli and Kolsa ranges. The nearest village to this location is Durgapur. Bounded by densely forested hills on the northern and western sides, the terrain features thick forests interspersed with meadows and valleys as it slopes from north to south. Cliffs, talus, and caves offer refuge for various wildlife species. The Tadoba and Andhari ranges form two forested rectangles, with the southern part of the park exhibiting a less hilly topography compared to the rest.

How Tadoba Get Its Name?

Tadoba was taken from the name of the god ''Taru'' who is the fierce man of the village and lived in dense forest, and Andhari refers to the river of the forest. So it is named 'Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve'. Taru was a brave man, and the people of the village say that he never feared the tiger and always had fierce behavior with them. One day, an encounter happens where Taru gets killed by the group of tigers. Then the people of the village started worshipping him and built a temple in his name. Every year, in the Hindu month of Paush, they celebrate his bravery and sacrifice with great devotion and reverence.
